3 HOURS, 3 CREDITS A senior seminar that will explore Hispanic issues through an indepth study of areas including crime, race and ethnic disparities, gender, language and culture, policing, courts and Latina/o litigants, urban politics, immigration laws and policies; legal representation, administrative policy and interest groups, and criminal justice themes in literature; analysis and evaluation of aspects most relevant to Latina/o communities. Prerequisites: ENG 102 or ENG 201, and senior standing, or permission of the section instructor.

Th e history and development of civil rights and civil liberties. Th e role of the modern police offi cer as generated by the balance of the requirements of peace and order and those of individual rights. Prerequisites: ENG 101 and one of the following: PSC 101, CRJ 101 or ICJ 101

3 HOURS, 3 CREDITS Consideration of the various factors, which infl uence the determination of patrol strength, type and distribution. Existing patrol practices in various police departments of the United States, Europe and the United Kingdom are compared and evaluated critically. Consideration of the future of patrol and an evaluation of recent theories for increasing effi ciency. Prerequisites: ENG 101 and sophomore standing or above.

3 HOURS, 3 CREDITS Introduction to criminal investigation in the fi eld. Consideration of conduct at the crime scene, interview and interrogation of witnesses and suspects, the use of informants and the techniques of surveillance. Emphasis on the special techniques employed in particular kinds of investigation and the presentation of the police cases in court. Prerequisites: ENG 101 and sophomore standing or above.

3 HOURS, 3 CREDITS Th e course covers both the theory and practice of Geographic Information Systems (“GIS”) for law enforcement and public safety purposes, atechnique known as “crime mapping.” Th e class introduces the theoreticalframework for the study of the ecology of public safety, or “crime and place,” the descriptive and analytic procedures of crime mapping, and how spatial analysis is used in designing and implementing eff ective programs of crime prevention, problem solving and community policing. Prerequisites: ENG 102 or ENG 201, and CRJ 101 or ICJ 101. Knowledge of Windows soft ware is required.

Several topics will be surveyed from an elementary point of view in order to develop an appreciation and understanding of a quantitative approach to the resolution of management-oriented problems. Prerequisites: ENG 101, and MAT 108 or MAT 141

Consideration of supervisory problems with a police/security system. Application of labor relations to eff ective performance. Topics include discipline, motivation, training, job classifi cation, salary standards and promotion. Prerequisites: ENG 101 and one of the following: PSC 101, CRJ 101 or ICJ 101
