This course will examine a range of literatures in previously colonized countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The course will explore colonial legacies in postcolonial works from a variety of literary genres as they relate to themes, ideas, form, technique, and style focusing on the hybridization of cultures as a result of colonialization. The bulk of class time will be spent reading, discussing, and analyzing the form and content of postcolonial writing within historical, social, and cultural contexts.? Current postcolonial theories and the discourse of power and domination will also be analyzed and critiqued.
