Dental Techniques for Veterinary Technicians is an introductory level course which will allow the student an opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding in clinical instrumentation for canine and feline. Through the use of lectures, demonstrations, audiovisuals, class activities and practical ("hands on") experience, the student will develop his/her skills in the following areas: infection control basics; dental anatomy for canines and felines; charting and documentation; basic instrumentation skills for the mirror, explorer, probe, scalers, curets, and ultrasonics; maintenance and care of instruments; homecare/plaque control for canines and felines. This is an intensive course covering the microscopic anatomy of cells, tissues, and organs of vertebrates. Emphasis is equally divided between the identification and the basic techniques of cytology and histology. The student learns the fundamentals of techniques applicable to histopathology. This course offers an introduction to the husbandry and medical care of common laboratory animals. This course includes extension study in the anatomy, physiology, and common diseases of the mouse, rat, guinea pig and rabbit. Course work also includes the laws that regulate the use of animals in research to insure they are treated humanely, including the Federal Animal Welfare Act and the USDA inspection process. This course is an intermediate level course that will prepare students for the administration of anesthesia and assisting with surgery. This course is designed to provide students with hands on experience with farm animals and will include visits to offcampus farms and farm animal veterinary hospitals. Students may incur travel expenses. Students will be required to dress appropriately for the farm and weather conditions as necessary.
