    This is a beginning course designed to provide complete familiarity with the keyboard, 10-key keypad, and computer components. Students are introduced to keyboard activated equipment, such as microprocessors or personal computers that are used for written correspondence and/or for inputting program data. Also included is an introduction to Microsoft Word for formatting the applications presented which include personal and business correspondence, resumes, and reports. Upon completion of this course, students will have learned the correct technique of keyboard operation to be able to type at a rate of 25 words a minute or better.     This is an introductory keyboarding course designed for students with little or no previous keyboarding experience. Students are provided with an opportunity to master the skill of entering alphabetic, numeric and symbolic information on a keyboard and a ten-key pad using the touch method of key stroking. Emphasis is placed on development of speed and accuracy, proper techniques and correct fingering. Building on these skills, students are then guided through the formatting of various kinds of business correspondence using a generic and popular word processor to produce finished products efficiently and correctly. Other skills associated with keyboarding, such as the ability to apply decision making to language arts and to evaluate the quality of work, are reinforced throughout the course.     The advanced course continues the development of keyboarding speed and accuracy. This course is designed to build production-level mastery on a wide variety of business documents and to streamline the creation of professionallooking documents using simulated materials. Students must establish priorities and actions to be taken when placed in a business setting with a variety of tasks to be completed. Through projects and teamwork, students must demonstrate their ability to make decisions, abstract information, maintain a smooth work flow and work under pressure.     This is a beginning course featuring basic word processing concepts and applications using the windows program. Basic features of Microsoft Word include the windows concept for creating, retrieving, editing and printing business documents. Also included are the following: spelling, grammar, thesaurus, auto correct, find and replace, manipulating tabs, manipulating text within and between documents, the use of templates, creating newspaper columns, headers/footers, footnotes/endnotes, creating tables, and merge. Prerequisite: Keyboarding experience with a typing speed of at least 30 words a minute. Lecture ( 45.00)

    This introductory course in legal terminology is designed to develop the student's ability to spell, pronounce and understand those words common to a law office.     Superwrite is an abbreviated writing system based primarily on longhand and secondarily on phonetics. Superwrite does not require memorizing a new alphabet or changing one's normal writing style. All 26 longhand letters are used. Students should be able to double their longhand writing speed. In addition to learning the superwrite system, emphasis is placed on taking notes for practical applications: dictation of messages, letters, memos, and minutes of meetings.     PowerPoint is a program used as a tool for information analysis, presentation and illustration. This course will teach students to understand how information is used to present, reinforce and illustrate concepts. Students will have the opportunity to develop and execute strategies for solving information-processing problems. Decision-making and problem-solving skills are integrated throughout the exercises. Prerequisite: Knowledge of Microsoft Word and keyboarding experience. Lecture ( 45.00)

    This advanced course is designed to help students refine their typewriting skills in a variety of realistic business situations. Students are given a series of mini-simulations to emphasize and provide practice in office document processing that incorporates skills such as decision making, abstracting information, setting priorities, editing, maintaining a smooth work flow and working under pressure. Desktop publishing techniques and machine transcription are introduced to complete some of the activities. Prerequisite: Advanced keyboarding experience with a typing speed of at least 40 words a minute and knowledge of Microsoft Word. Lecture ( 30.00) Laboratory ( 30.00)

    This course is designed for students who are already familiar with the basics of Microsoft Word. Students will become familiar with the advanced capabilities of word processing, and then progress to the desktop publishing tools necessary for completing the publication of professional looking documents. Design elements will be utilized and reinforced throughout the course, including the appropriate use of focus, balance, proportion, contrast, directional flow, consistency, color, and page layout. An overview of Microsoft Publisher software will also be provided. Lecture ( 45.00) Prerequisites: OST-123

    This course is designed to acquaint the office assistant student with a wide range of office activities that will be demanded in the workplace. Basic skills in typewriting are assumed, and the emphasis is then placed on the decision making, organizational, communication, human relations, and time and stress management skills that will help prepare the prospective office professional. Case problems, projects, and simulations are assigned in word processing, filing and records management, transmittal services, communications, conference and travel arrangements, and financial and legal documents. Prerequisite: Keyboarding experience with a typing speed of at least 40 words a minute. OST-123 is a required corequisite for all students who do not have keyboarding skills.
