    This course will introduce the student to disease registration and surveillance. Legal issues governed by HIPAA legislation that pertain to a cancer registry will be discussed. Ethics and standards affecting a cancer registry will be explored. Case ascertainment, registry files, follow-up methodology, and the presentation of data will be discussed and examined. Students will be instructed on national registry standards. Students will be given detailed information on American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (COC) and the New Jersey State Cancer Registry requirements.     This course will build on the information presented in Elements of Statistics (MTH-111). The objective of this course is to target the student to the application of statistical methods in the field of Health Information Technology. Specific ratios and rates directly related to the acute care medical environment will be a part of classroom discussion. Practical application of class lectures will be completed. The concepts of data presentation, computerization of statistics, and the application of this information to non-acute care medical environments will also be addressed. It is important that students have strong familiarity with this information since it can be a vital part of job duties for Health Information Technology Technicians.     This course will expand upon information covered in Introduction to Ambulatory Coding (HIT-130). Students will learn how to manipulate coding software packages and utilize the CPT and HCPCS manuals to code for physician procedures and services. Advanced coding proficiency directed at surgical coding will be emphasized. Computer applications of the CPT program through the 3M software will be demonstrated and the students will be allowed time to use this coding application.     This course will provide the student enrolled in the Health Information Technology degree program the opportunity for practical application of what they have learned in the classroom. This is the capstone course for the degree program. The components of health information analysis, information technology, information systems, organization, and supervision are vital focus areas for this internship/experience.     This course is designed to provide the student with advanced techniques and practice of medical transcription. While meeting progressively demanding accuracy and productivity standards, students will continue developing skills in medical terminology, proofreading and the use of appropriate medical references and other resources. A variety of transcription simulations will be provided to prepare the student with the challenges to perform successfully in a medical environment. Lecture ( 45.00) Prerequisites: HIT-125

    This course will provide students enrolled in the Medical Transcription Certificate Program an opportunity for practical application of classroom material. They will experience the day-to-day environment typical for the field. They will also receive exposure to the independent nature of the profession and have the opportunity to utilize various reference materials used daily by a professional Medical Transcriptionist.     This course focuses on application and analysis in the following areas: managerial processes, clinical quality assessment, performance improvement, project management, and organizational resources. Data presentation via oral and written formats will be emphasized. This course has a lab component, which will focus on the practical application of performance improvement and quality assurance plans in a stimulated "real-world" environment.     This course focuses on disease and procedural coding with emphasis on the advanced application of coding. It includes practical application of coding in-patient and outpatient records. Coding standards, coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and regulatory agencies will also be discussed. Information on the prospective payment systems will be discussed in detail. The link between medical record documentation, pathophysiology, and reimbursement will be explored through lecture presentations and the usage of actual medical charts.     This course will focus on the principles of cancer registry case abstracting. Cancer staging and coding will be reviewed in detail. The ICD-O-3 manual and coding software will be utilized. AJCC Staging Manual, SEER Summary Staging Manual and Collaborative Stage Manual will be also be utilized throughout this course. The practical application of coding and staging will be emphasized using scenarios and actual health records. Students will have the opportunity to hear of the latest cancer treatments from physician guest speakers.
