This course will examine the visual expression of German, Austrian, and Swiss artists of the 20th century, including Die Brucke, Der Blaue Reiter, Dada, Neue Sachlichkeit, Surrealism, Bauhaus, art of National Socialism, and Post-War developments in the art of both West and East Germany. Particular emphasis will be placed on art and artists in relationship to political and social events of the time, especially the two World Wars, the rise of National Socialism, and the Cold War.
