RE 403-3: Intro.to Judaism
3.00 Credits
Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary
The transition from Israelite religion, as depicted in the Hebrew Bible, to Rabbinic Judaism, which unfolded from the 2nd Century before the Common Era to the 6th Century of the Common Era, was revolutionary. This course will explore the dominant values and practices of what became traditional Judaism. This exploration will be conducted primarily through encounters with primary texts such as the Talmud, Jewish philosophy and Biblical commentary. After an examination of the innovations of Rabbinic Judaism as it developed through the Middle Ages, we will focus on contemporary expressions of Judaism.

The goal of this course, which is introductory in nature, is to enable the student to broaden and enrich his/her understanding of Islam as a religious tradition. It presupposes an interest in Islam and a desire to learn about and explore the doctrinal, ethical, ritual, socioeconomic, political, cultural and experiential dimensions of this way of life. TF 102-3: Faith Seeking Understanding
3.00 Credits
Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary
Faith Seeking Understanding (FQI) is a teamtaught, interdisciplinary course in theology and ethics that is usually taken in the fall semester of the first year. FQI is designed to follow the summer course for entering students, Transforming Seminary Education (TSE), and to anticipate the two-semester course History of Christian Experience (HCE). The purpose of FQI is to help students gain greater confidence and competence in thinking theologically and ethically. The course intends to prepare students for this task by providing an introduction to systematic theology and ethical method. Students will reflect on the interplay between belief and behavior, as they wrestle with contemporary issues in theology and ethics. FQI is organized around a series of fundamental theological questions: How do we know what to believe What do we mean by God What's wrong with us How does Jesus make a difference In response to these questions we will encourage students to listen to a rich variety of voices and to engage those voices as they answer the questions for themselves.
