This course will trace the emergence of the Baptist Churches in the United States. Special attention will be given to American Baptist Churches (U.S.A.), the National Baptist movement and the Southern Baptist Convention as denominational expressions of Baptist life. Students will be introduced to the "culture" ofthe Baptist tradition in order to understand its distinctive character today. Prerequisites: Faith Seeking Understanding

This course will introduce students to the congregational polity and programs of the Baptist tradition. Questions concerning fundamental issues in Baptist statements of faith, their development and evolution, and their relationship to the varieties of contemporary Baptist expressions will be addressed.

David C. Hester This course is intended to introduce students to the praxis of Christian education in a congregational setting. It is a course in practical theology, and students who have completed it should be able to engage issues and problems in church education, interpreting them theologically and methodologically and designing appropriate practical responses. Students examine the culture of a congregation, and consider what is necessary to meet their congregation's needs for education for belonging, critical reflection, and public witness. This course fulfills the Teaching Ministry requirement for the Master of Divinity degree program.

David C. Hester; J. Bradley Wigger This course examines congregational youth ministry. Issues include: growing up in today's world, the role of youth groups in nurturing faith, and the relationship of youth ministry to the whole life and work of the church. Case studies will help identify ministry needs; and youth ministry resources will be surveyed. This course fulfills the Teaching Ministry requirement for the Master of Divinity degree program.

J. Bradley Wigger This course will explore the various situations of children in relation to educational ministry. Insights from the human sciences, theology, biblical studies, and the arts will be used to help address such questions and concerns as: How is the life of faith passed on from one generation to the next What is a family's role in Christian nurture What is a congregation's role What might Christian formation in childhood involve Is there a spirituality of parenting What is going on in childhood cognitively, developmentally, morally, socially, or culturally These questions, among others, will be pursued with particular attention devoted to the educational dimensions and implications for the church's ministry. This course fulfills the Teaching Ministry requirement for the Master of Divinity degree program.

J. Bradley Wigger This course is an opportunity to study theories of intelligence and learning that recognize multiple domains of human knowing and explore their significance in relation to the life of faith and educational ministries. We will explore theological, ethical, and cultural implications of multiple intelligence theory as well as themes of multiplicity in faith and church life. Great consideration will be given to imagining and implementing a multiple intelligences perspective in Christian education, both in Church school settings and beyond classrooms. This course fulfills the teaching ministry requirement for the Master of Divinity program.

David C. Hester Curriculum may be considered as a systematic plan for the teaching ministry of a congregation. This course considers principles for the design, analysis, and evaluation of curriculum. Attention will also be given to teachinglearning processes and appropriate methods for various educational purposes and contexts. The workshop format of the course will provide opportunities for students to practice planning and leading educational experiences, to design curriculum units, and to survey and evaluate published curriculum materials. This course fulfills the Teaching Ministry requirement for the Master of Divinity degree program.

Hester This is an interdisciplinary course concerned with the practice of teaching Bible in the congregation, particularly involving skills of biblical exegesis, interpretation methods, and teaching designs. Particular biblical texts for focus will be determined at the time of scheduling. Past texts have included the Book of Jeremiah and Job. This course fulfills the Teaching Ministry requirement for the Master of Divinity degree program.

Bradley Wigger This course is intended to enable students to consider how people grow in the life of faith through Christian practices and the implications for Christian formation in a congregation. Biblical and theological claims concerning human growth and maturity are examined in critical dialogue with insights from educational psychology and learning theory. This course fulfills the Teaching Ministry requirement for the Master of Divinity degree program.

David C. Hester This is a practical theology course addressing the practice of Confirmation/Reaffirmation of Baptism in mainline Protestant churches today. Preparing persons for participation in this rite of passage is most often the responsibility of the pastor-teacher or other educator in a congregation. In anticipation of your congregational role, we will critically examine and reflect upon current debates, issues, and models for confirmation. This course fulfills the Teaching Ministry requirement for the Master of Divinity degree program.
