This course studies human behavior with emphasis on emotional and mental abnormalities and modes of treatment incorporating the nursing process. Theoretical concepts of mental behavioral health for all age groups are introduced, including development disabilities. Therapeutic communication skills in relation to providing nursing care to patients with altered thought processes are emphasized.

This supervised clinical laboratory course focuses on building competency in utilization of nursing knowledge and skills taught in Mental Health Nursing for Practical Nursing (LPNU 132NR) and other pre-requisite and co-requisite courses. Laboratory assignments focus on caring for institutionalized patients with alterations in mental health and the application of theoretical knowledge in the management of various mental health alterations. Students interact with patients on a one to one basis and in group situations. Each student follows one patient throughout the clinical course and comletes a comprehensive nursing care plan, including revisions in care based on patient progress. Students continue to participate in their own clinical performance evaluation and are encouraged to seek clinical experiences to enhance individual learning. To provide meaningful clinical supervision and learning, a ratio of 1 instructor to no more than 10 students is maintained.

This capstone course aids the practical nursing student in the transition from student to licensed practical nurse. The content focuses on the concepts and principles associated wtih leadership, delegation, team leading, professionalism, and selected nursing and healthcare issues. Sections of the WV Nurse Practice Act associated with practical nursing, including role, scope of practice, licensure, discipline, and continuing education, are studied in detail. Students attend at least one professional continuing education activity and participate in, at least, 2 community service activities. Preparation and review for the NCLEX-PN licensing examination is offered with emphasis on computer testing skills, and the various content areas included in the examination. Application of course content is provided during supervised clinical lab experiences in LPNU 131LN and LPNU 133LN.

4.00 Credits
This course provides an introduction to the profession of medical assisting, including qualifications, duties, and the role of the medical assistant. The student is introduced to medical office personnel, professionalism, organizations and memberships, continuing education requirements, and the legal and ethical considerations that affect medical office personnel.

This course focuses on the principles of pharmacology, drug therapy and administration of medications by the medical assistant. The course introduces general principles of drug action, pharmacology of the major drug classifications, and drug side effects.

An introduction to procedures that are basic to assisting physicians in the examination and treatment of patients in the medical office. Students develop knowledge and skills in standard precautions, aseptic techniques, measurement of vital signs, recording medical history, assisting physician with general specialized exams, vision testing, respiratory testing, displaying a professional image, and medical law and ethics.

All aspects of medical terminology are studied. Prefix and suffix abbreviations, introduction to biologic systems, etc.
