It is designed to provide the foundation of knowledge for providing basic, holistic nursing care to individuals with predictable healthcare needs. Emphasis is placed on the use of the nursing process to assist students develop critical thinking skills and to meet the physiological, social, and psychological needs of hospitalized patients. Application of course content is provided during supervised clinical lab experiences throughout the program of study.

This supervised clinical laboratory course focuses upon building competency in the utilization of nursing skills and concepts taught in the co-requisite nursing courses. Students progress from assisting with simple patient care activities to more complex nursing interventions. Critical thinking in clinical situations is introduced as students begin to use the nursing process to develop nursing plans of care. Students begin to participate in their clinical performance evaluation and are encouraged to seek clinical experiences to enhance individual learning needs. To provide meaningful clinical supervision and learning, a ration of 1 instructor to no more than 10 students is maintained.

It includes the history of nursing and the role of the licensed practical nurse in various healthcare settings. Students study selected sections of the WV Nurse Practice Act and various position statements published by the WV Board of Examiner's for Licensed Practical Nurses. This course builds on the principles, concepts, and skills introduced in Foundations of Nursing (LPNU 105NR) and Geriatrics (LPNU 116NR) to focus study on adults with alterations in selected medical-surgical conditions. Utilizing a body systems approach, the course is designed to prepare the student in the use of the nursing process when caring for the adult patient experiencing pathophysiological alterations requiring medical and/or surgical interventions. Included in the course is the nursing care of the adult patient with simple to complex short term or long term nursing needs. Advanced nursing skills are introduced. Using patient scenarios students develop comprehensive nursing care plans that include assessment, nursing diagnoses, patient goals, nursing interventions, scientific rationale for each intervention, and patient goal evaluation. Application of course content is provided during supervised clinical lab experiences throughout the program of study.
