AME 77106: Reliability Based Design Optimization
3.00 Credits
University of Notre Dame
In a deterministic design optimization, the designs are often driven to the limit of the desgin constraints, leaving little or not latitude for uncertainties. The resulting deterministic optimal solution is usually associated with a high chance of failure, of the artifact being designed, due to the influend of uncertainties inherently present during the modeling and manufacturing phases of the artifact and due to uncertainties in the external operating conditions of the artifact. The uncertainties inculed variations in certain parameters, whice are either controllable or uncontrollable and model uncertainties and errors associated with the simulations tools used for simulation based design. Uncertainties in simulations based design are in herently present and need to be accounted for in the design optimization process. Uncertainties may lead to large variations in the performance characteristics of the system and a high chance of failure of the artifact. Optimized deterministic designs determined without considering uncertainties can be unreliable and might lead to catastrophic failure of the artifact being designed. Robust design optimization and reliability based design optimization are methodologies that address these problems. Robust designs are designs at which the variation in the performance functions is minimal. Reliable designs are designs at which the chance of failure of the system is low.

AME 77107: Molecular Methods in Modeling Materials
3.00 Credits
University of Notre Dame
The objective of this coures is to introduce the concepts of advanced molecular level simulation methods to analyze thermo-mechano-electrical performance of advanced materials. Simulation techniques covered includ ab-initio methods, semi-classical methods such as pseudopotential methods to classical methods such as classical molecular dynamics methods. A portion of the course will be devoted to developing a software program to analyze a very basic molecular level simulation problem.

AME 90011: Perturbation Methods
3.00 Credits
University of Notre Dame
The course consists of a comprehensive study of asymptotic methods to find analytic approximate solutions of ordinary and partial differential equations. Methods appropriate to problems that contain small or large parameters, and to problems for which the approximate solutions is desired for small or large values of independent variables are discussed.
