ENVG 24221: Marine and Coastal Planning and Management
3.00 Credits
University of Notre Dame
This unit provides students with a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of marine and coastal planning and management. Students are able to apply the theory and practice of integrated coastal management, recognising the complexity of the institutions involved and produce detailed analyses of specific relevant case studies. Students are introduced to past and present theories of coastal zone management and their relevance in contemporary society. An integrated approach is outlined and used as the template to evaluate responses to key threats to coastal environments including climate change, urban development and mining, whilst also critically evaluating marine conservation policy in the form of protected areas. The issues related to ensuring stakeholder involvement in management activities are underlined and guest speakers and local field visits are organised to illustrate these themes.
