EC 3030 European Economy at Trinity College; This course provides the theoretical and historical background to post-war economic integration in Europe and thereby equips students with an advanced understanding of the issues at the forefront of current public debate. The relevant strands of modern economic theory are examined in the context of the european experience. Particular attention is devoted to policy areas in which EU co-ordination has progressed most: monetary integration, internal market, external trade policy, regional policy, factor mobility, agriculture and competition policy. Assessment: 1 test, 1 essay, 1 x 3 hour exam.

This course introduces students to key areas of development economics and explores some of the major economic policy issues relating to developing countries. This is accomplished by presenting applicable economic models and empirical evidence for theories of growth and development, poverty and income distribution, human resources, labor markets and employment, industrialization and technology, agriculture and rural development, monetary and fiscal issues, inflation, foreign trade and payments, foreign and domestic capital, economic aid, the operation of markets, and the role of government in development. The economic analysis presented in this course specifically relates these topics to the conditions in developing countries.

Taught as PRAC 3000 'Development Practicum' at host institution. The Development Practicum offers students a hands-on opportunity to learn about development in the field. Each student selects a development organization with which to complete a six-week Development Practicum. The practicum can be completed in Kampala or other areas of Uganda with organizations engaged in a broad spectrum of development projects. Students directly apply the concepts and skills of field-based learning discussed in the Field Study Seminar, the language capabilities developed through both formal instruction and informal practice, and the important area-studies background conveyed in the Development Studies Seminar. In addition, students have occasion to hone their skills in dealing with and learning from the unexpected as well as accomplishing a major learning task in a challenging new environment. MAJOR COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1) To provide the opportunity for hands-on experience with a development organization; 2) To select, design, and implement an individual study that investigates a dimension of development in Uganda; 3) To learn and utilize effectively a field-study report format.

A two-semester tutorial requiring a completed essay on a selected topic in economics in depth. The John Harold Sheehan Prize Essay Award with inscribed plaque is awarded by the Department of Economics to the graduating senior who has written the best senior honors essay.
