ARHI 44715: Song & Yuan Painting
4.00 Credits
University of Notre Dame
The Song dynasty (960-1279 CE) can be thought of as the golden age of Chinese painting. It was a period when the various pictorial genres developed to their full extent. One can readily find new surges of subject matters, functions, meanings and styles in paintings and in prints of that time. Artists and influential scholar-officials, who themselves often were artists and new leaders of the Song cultural world, wrote art theories that supported the new movement. Song paintings and printed works always kept providing the most important resources or classic models from which later artists were constantly inspired. We will deal with representative masterpieces of painting produced in the Song dynasty to study essences of Chinese art. At the same time we will use art as historical material and means to reconstruct the life, society and politics of this period in China. Through these we will also try to understand the characteristics of Chinese culture.

ARHI 44739: Japanese Narrative Painting
4.00 Credits
University of Notre Dame
Myths, legends, and folklore take shape as the common property shared by people in a particular society. In Japan, the themes of these stories were derived from Buddhist scriptures, from legends passed down among ordinary people, or from literature enjoyed by the aristocracy. These often developed into visual art forms to be offered to temples and shrines, or to be appreciated among the people concerned. In this course, several examples of such forms of art of medieval Japan derived from literature and legends are selected as the focus of study. Textual passages will be compared with visual expressions to understand the characteristics of narrative painting. Every other year.
