    The focus of this course is the role of the professional nurse in meeting the mental health and psychiatric needs of diverse individuals, families and groups in their communities. Theoretical concepts related to clients' biopsychosocial and cultural responses, mental health promotion, risk reduction and multidisciplinary psychiatric illness management are explored. Clinical experiences promote development of critical thinking, self-awareness, effective communication techniques and ethical nursing practice. Integration of theory and current research findings provides a foundation for clinical judgment and decision-making in a variety of settings.     This course focuses on the research process and its significance to nursing as a discipline and a profession. Students develop basic skills needed to utilize research findings toward evidence-based practices in nursing. The emphasis is on critiquing published nursing research, promoting student understanding of their role as a discriminating consumer of research and utilizing research for continuous quality improvement in nursing practice and related areas. The course incorporates content related to ethical, cultural and collaboration issues in health care research.

Leadership and management theory is applied to clients at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of care. Critical thinking, research and decision making in culturally diverse health care settings are discussed. Professional behaviors, economics of health care delivery, policy, ethical, legal and selected issues inherent in leadership and management are analyzed.

    This course focuses on the essentials of nursing care of older adults. Students will explore the physiological, functional, cognitive, affective, cultural, ethical and social aspects of the aging process. Research and theoretical perspectives related to nursing management of selected aspects of aging will be examined. Strategies to enhance health aging will be explored.

    This course builds on the knowledge and skills developed in previous nursing courses, especially Clients with Disruptions of Health I, which focuses on nursing and collaborative care of clients in the acute care setting. The students will study the practice of professional nursing for clients with complex health problems. Clinical settings at the secondary and tertiary levels of care may include the acute care setting, outpatient setting, long-term setting or home care setting. Prerequisites: All NUR courses in semesters 5, 6 and 7 Co-requisites: NUR 4360 Nursing Leadership and Management

    This course is designed to provide the student with an in-depth mentored experience within a mutually agreed upon field of nursing practice. The focus of the clinical practice is centered on the use of the nursing process and refinement and of clinical skills in the delivery of quality nursing care for individuals, families, groups and communities. This experience also fosters professional socialization through the process of self-evaluation of personal and professional goals.     This course includes nursing assessment and health promotion within the context of a community, identifying needs endemic to the people within it. Health promotion and treatment will be provided with a holistic perspective on health. Students are given opportunities to learn about health care delivery in the context of cultural, family, socio-economic, and religious systems. Community locations and terms of course offerings will vary.
