(XL: CLAS 210) A study of the monuments and other material remains that illustrate the historical development of Greece and Rome. Some attention will be paid to the topography of Athens and Rome and of other selected sites. Guest lecturers, such as those of the Archaeological Institute of America, may present information in related areas, e.g., on the Egyptians, Phoenicians, etc. Some major archaeologists will be discussed for their contributions. In this course, students will explore design history, theory, technique and the formal language of graphic communications. Students will combine the theories in typography and image and apply them to conceptual projects. The history of graphic design will be discussed as well as new trends in the field. Assignments, critiques, lectures and discussions will critically analyze the nature of design problems, research, articulation and presentation.
