ENGL 312R: Shakespeare: Comedies & Romances
4.00 Credits
Rockford University
In what ways does Shakespeare transform, even subvert, the genre of comedy? If comedy is 'tragedy averted' how seriously are we to take the melancholy within the comedies, the anti-comic voices? What do the clowns and jesters contribute? And why do Shakespeare's 'unruly women' seem to dominate the comedies as they both celebrate and mock romantic love? As audience participation contributes to the comic effect, as well as studying the texts students will evaluate movie versions of plays on the programme. PRQ: RHET 102 or the equivalent.
