Applying theories developed to account for violent behavior in large-scale societies, this course will attempt to discover whether homo sapiens' violence is inherent to the species, whether it is a set of learned behaviors or whether it is the result of some combination of variables. Using information from around the world, and from different historical periods, students will explore how humanity has attempted to deal with this intractable problem. An examination of the concept of illness and of the medical, pharmacological, and healing practices used to combat illness in different parts of the world. The course will address the relative efficacy of scientific and traditional medicines and techniques, and the different ways practitioners address the whole array of physical, mental, and social problems. The roles of physician, nurse, shaman, medicine man, witch doctor, and herbalist will be examined. PRQ: ANSO 100 or consent of instructor. Scheduled: Spring, odd years. Meets: SNO.

Topics include Africa's place in human evolution; the geography, history, and languages of Africa; economics, kinship; politics and religion in traditional African cultures; relations with peoples from other areas; slavery and Africa; modernization and culture change; African liberation movements; Africa's place in the modern world. Topics to be discussed include the Caribbean before Columbus; the arrival of the Europeans; the introduction of African slaves; African patterns found in the Caribbean today; Caribbean marriage and kinships; voodoo, shango and other syncretic cults; Caribbean economic and political development; emigration from the Caribbean to the United States, Canada, France and Britain; independence and communism in the Caribbean.
