(XL: ANSO 228) The purpose of this course is to deepen our understanding of the causes and consequences of war, violence, and conflict and of the means of conflict resolution and management. The course will explore the different approaches taken by the social sciences in the study of conflict resolution and management. Students enrolled in the course will engage in a service learning project that will involve mentoring area high school youth in a peace and conflict studies curriculum developed in collaboration with PeaceJam, an international educational organization established in 1996 by 12 Nobel Peace Prize winners. Working for a total of 20 hours outside the classroom, students will have the opportunity to compete for membership on a team that will attend a youth conference where they will meet a Nobel Peace Prize winner and will learn more about peacemaking. (Note: Course satisfies major and minor requirements in Political Science, but does not satisfy major or minor requirements in Anthropology/Sociology.) PRQ: None. Scheduled: Spring yearly.
