An introduction to research. Topics include research design, formulation of hypotheses, construction of measurement instruments, administration of questionnaires, data analysis, interpretation of results and report writing, with an emphasis on single subject research. Prerequisite: Sociology 201, Psychology 221. Same as Sociology 345.

Explores the social, cultural and technological characteristics of living in rural America. The course emphasizes the application of social work values and methods in providing human services in rural environments. Topics include rural poverty, rural people and special populations, strengths and problems of rural communities, and rural communities in transition. No prerequisite.

Supervised field instruction and practice in social work. Field instruction gives students the opportunity to integrate classroom theory and social work practice. This course provides instruction and practice in a variety of social work methods with individuals, groups, families, organizations and communities. Prerequisites: Social Work 312 and 314.

Focuses on integrating emerging practice, policy, research, environmental issues and ethical decision-making. Designed to address ethical decision making and other topics which will aid the student in integration of Social Work 5 Updated 2.19.09 classroom and field experiences toward the goal of entry-level social work. Prerequisites: all required Social Work courses.

An introduction to the general principles of sociology and its subfields, including an investigation into the development of culture and subcultures; the effects of groups and institutions on personal behavior; structure and process in social interaction. Offered each semester.

An analysis of the patterns of interpersonal relations involved in dating, marrying and parenting. Prerequisites: Sociology 201. Offered in alternate years.

The nature and dynamics of contemporary social problems and change from a global perspective. The central theories of sociology are applied to understanding and solving social problems. The role of social and economic justice and social policy in the resolution of social problems will be explored. The course will also take into account how social and structural factors influence events and conditions of our lives and impact on change. Exploration of personal belief and attitudes regarding social problems will be encouraged. Prerequisites: Sociology 201 and Political Science 203.

Analysis of the psychological processes in relation to social situations and interpersonal behavior. How language, perception, learning, thinking, motivation, traits and attitudes determine and result from social interaction and group processes. Same as Psychology 321. Prerequisite: Psychology 201. Offered every year.
