  • 1.00 - 3.00 Credits

    Prerequisite: MUS 136 or department examination. Theory placement score must be 70 or higher to enroll and concurrent enrollment in MUS 170. This is the first course in a series of four courses devoted to the aural skills of musicianship. The course includes division of the beat in simple and compound meters; identification of scales, intervals, triads, and seventh chords; and melodies moving by step and using skips within the tonic triad in major and minor tonalities. Aural understanding is developed through dictation and sight singing. Music majors must complete this course with a grade of "C" or better to enroll in MUS 181. This course may be repeated up to three times. (Formerly MUS 124)
  • 1.00 - 3.00 Credits

    Prerequisite: MUS 180 with a grade of "C" or better and concurrent enrollment in MUS 171. This is the second course in a series of four courses devoted to the aural skills of musicianship. The course includes intervals from the dominant triad and dominant seventh chord in major and minor keys in simple and compound meters; other diatonic intervals of the seventh and tritone; subdivision of the beat in simple and compound meters; and structured improvisation. Aural understanding is developed through dictation, sight singing, and improvisation. Music majors must complete this course with a grade of "C" or better to enroll in MUS 280. This course may be repeated up to three times. (Formerly MUS 125)
  • 3.00 - 4.00 Credits

    Prerequisite: MUS 125 with a grade of "C" or better. This is the third course in a series of four courses in music theory. The course includes basic fundamentals, diatonic chords and principles of voice leading. Study in harmonic progression concludes this course. Aural understanding is developed through dictation and sightsinging. Music majors must complete this course with a grade of "C" or better to enroll in MUS 202, the fourth course in the sequence.   • 3.00 - 4.00 Credits

    Prerequisite: MUS 201 with a grade of "C" or better. This is the fourth course in a series of four courses in music theory. The course includes Neopolitan chords, augmented 6th chords, other chromatic materials, and enharmonic modulation. Late 19th century harmony and an introduction to 20th century practices are also included. Aural understanding is developed through dictation and sightsinging.   • 2.00 - 3.00 Credits

    Prerequisite: Department approval, prior piano experience or concurrent enrollment in applied piano This course focuses on a practical study of how to teach piano at the beginning level. It includes an examination of piano methods on the elementary level, observation of skilled teachers and supervised teaching experience. In addition, specific teaching areas, such as rhythm, technique, sight-reading, pedaling and theory are studied through a lecture, discussion and master class approach.

    Prerequisite: MUS 205 or department approval This course focuses on the study of intermediate level piano literature and methods. This study includes a brief historical background of piano literature, including performances, practices, listening experiences and student performance of intermediate level literature. Observation of skilled teachers and supervised teaching are also included.
  • 2.00 - 3.00 Credits

    Prerequisite: MUS 111 This course is for music majors who have little or no previous piano instruction. The purpose of this course is to develop a basic quality at the keyboard required by the musician and enhance aural understanding of music. Laboratory hours will be practice outside of the classroom. This course can be repeated up to three times.
  • 2.00 - 3.00 Credits

    Prerequisite: MUS 210 or equivalent and concurrent enrollment in MUS 271 and MUS 281. This course is for music majors who have little or no previous piano instruction. The purpose of this course is to develop a basic quality at the keyboard required by the musician and enhance aural musicianship. Laboratory hours will be practice outside of the classroom. This course can be repeated up to three times.
  • 2.00 - 3.00 Credits

    Prerequisite: MUS 114 This course is for non-music majors who have little or no previous piano instruction. By the end of the second semester the student is able to play most keyboard music for personal enjoyment.
  • 2.00 - 3.00 Credits

    Prerequisite: Piano experience, completion of previous course in sequence, and registration in ensemble or department approval This course provides continuing study for the piano major on an individualized basis.
