In this unique travel course students will live in Hyde Park, one of Chicago'smost successfully integrated communities. Students willmeet together in a seminar which will include readings, discussions, assignments, and scheduled events that will engage themwith Chicago's diverse populations, cultural expressions, and political processes. Students willmeet and talk one-on-one with community organizers, artists, performers and political leaders. They will visit ethnically diverse neighborhoods and port of entry immigrant communities. They will enjoy Chicago's diverse foods and experience new worship traditions. They will attend cultural events such as blues clubs, political art galleries and off-loop theater. Students will also be placed in a nine-day internship with a Chicago-based institution in the students'major area of interest. Offered inMay Term.
