This course introduces students to the many ways culture mediates and shapes the human experiences of birthing, dying, and especially, of health and illness, and how cultures have adapted to westernized/biomedical notions of health care. Emphasizing ethnographic research on non-western societies, it highlights the ways in which rituals that frame and give meaning to healing practices, the human relationships necessary for healing to occur, and the variety of ways in which illness is communicated by individuals have changed over time.
