Principles of curriculum development, and analysis of pedagogical theory and practice at the middle and high school levels. Study of curriculum planning, instructional strategies, and assessment, with attention to creating positive learning environments responsive to the individual needs and abilities of all students. Concurrent enrollment in 360 D1, D2, or D3 is required. Required field experience (50 hours minimum). Prerequisites: Acceptance to the Teacher Education Program and four courses in the major. Taken semester just prior to student teaching. Offered each spring.

Throughout the world, education has been viewed as an important means of improving people's lives. This assumption is examined and critiqued by analyzing educational policies and practices in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Specific topics include the educational treatment of girls, indigenous peoples, street children, child refugees, and child laborers. Also examined are the efforts to teach reformed child soldiers and children who are, or whose parents are, HIV positive. Offered every other year.

Travel with a faculty member and fellow students. Includes independent projects, daily journal, and field trips to schools, cultural centers, museums, and/or other sites of interest.May be repeated if itinerary is different. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. Offered occasionally.

Directed research and individually designed field experience in an educational, community, or social service setting. Prerequisites: junior/senior standing and education advisor approval. Offered as needed.

Full time immersion and induction into the range of experiences associated with public school teaching under the guidance and direction of a cooperating teacher and university supervisor. Concurrent attention to documenting teaching competencies and gathering evidence for the Senior Portfolio. Discussion of potential teacher inquiry projects. Concurrent enrollment in a weekly seminar is required. Prerequisites: 100 hours of field experience and acceptance to Student Teaching. Refer to the Teacher Education Handbook. Chicago placement option. Offered each fall.

Capstone course. Student led and collaborative research within classroom, school, and community contexts, culminating in a public presentation. Includes extensive literature review. Completion of senior portfolio. Optional field experience. Prerequisites: Completion of Educ 490, 491, 492 or the completion of all other courses in the interdisciplinary major or minor.

Examines theory and practice of writing creatively. Reading combined with practice in the basic processes of and strategies for writing fiction, poetry, or drama. Offered annually.

Critical reading and interpretation of literary texts. Encourages close reading as well as oral and written work in articulating understanding. May be repeated for credit if subjectmatter is not duplicated. Offered each semester.

Workshop in reading and writing fiction while focusing on principles and techniques used by writers and on key elements of the story form. Students will complete stories and develop a portfolio. Prerequisite:Gateway Colloquium. Offered annually.
