Historical survey of early American civilizations. Emphasis is on cultural, religious, social, governmental, and economic developments. Attention is given to the historical significance of the European intrusion and the interchange of American, European, and African ideas, resources, products, and peoples. Prereq: sophomore standing.

In addition to exploring America’s impact on both world wars and their consequences for United States history, the course analyzes the social, economic, cultural, intellectual, political, and diplomatic history of the interwar period, 1919-1941. The course examines the rise and weakening of the postwar economic and social order, especially during and after the Vietnam War, Watergate, and the Middle East crises of the 1970s.
