Introduces the concept of health informatics, encompassing a high level of integration of all aspects of health care. Includes review of managed care concepts, information system tools, and comprehensive management and consulting services that assist in integration, as well as health maintenance organizations (HMOs) . Explores intranet and Internet uses and the transition to an electronic practice. ISP, ISW only.

Hands-on experience in designing a database application for a community health or clinical facility, with a foundation in basic database management principles. Application of analytical concepts through conducting a needs assessment, designing data entry forms and reports, developing specifications, and preparing an implementation and evaluation plan.

Introduction to various reimbursement methods and payment systems associated with the delivery of health care services. Emphasis is on the history of governmental involvement in financing health care, mainly through the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Also studies DRGs, RBRVS, CHAMPUS, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, managed care, APGs, RUGs, and other payment methods. Includes analysis of case studies and interpretation of clinical and financial data. ISP only.

Introduces information management techniques specific to the medical industry. Focus is on understanding and decision making in medical organizations, primarily as related to data and information systems. Builds understanding of different methods of developing operational priorities, problems related to human resource development and use, and other aspects of the medical industry that separate it from information management processes in industrial settings.

Prereq: enrollment in final semester before graduation; perm. Exposure to real-world working conditions; involves assignment to a medical workplace to implement and observe medical informatics programs in an operating environment, working on assignments under the supervision of medical facility officials. Individual student needs and the character of the medical organization are matched as closely as possible.

Covers the development of an American culture followed by the beginnings of the country's transformation into a world power both militarily and economically.
