Provides a general foundation for understanding the organization, delivery, and financing of health services. Includes study of acute, long-term, and ambulatory care institutions and third-party payers; medical sociology, including the roles, education, and politics of clinicians and allied health personnel as well as emerging trends; and the U.S. health care system in comparison to those of other countries, including nationalized systems. Surveys the fundamental features, roles, and responsibilities of health care administrators. Specific study of the immediate context within which health care administrators work, how they spend their time, the importance of judgment, the kinds of problems by which they are challenged, and the opportunities and constraints they face in sustaining an organization and implementing change.

An in-depth study of managed health care in the U.S. Provides the working knowledge necessary to administer any form of managed care activity. Includes such topics as utilization review, contracting and negotiating with health providers and systems, compensation systems, disease management systems, medical management, insurance rating and underwriting, and public-sector managed care. Prereq: LGLS 298. Legal theory, policy, and ethics unique to the health services field. Topics include legal policy, patient rights, informed consent, contracts, tax and labor law, governmental regulation, accreditation, ethics licensure, and institutional and professional liability. Case studies provide preparation in recognizing legal issues, understanding key viewpoints, and knowing where to obtain additional information and consultation. ISP only.

Prereq: MGMT 302, HCAR 303. Addresses the methodology used in health care and support systems to plan, implement, and evaluate services and programs, as well as theories, methods, history, and application of planning in health organizations. Provides practical skills in developing written tactical and strategic plans for health services and programs.

Prereq: ACCT 341. Theory and practice of health financing and fiscal management theory and practice. Builds knowledge of and proficiency in health economics, third-party reimbursement techniques, institutional and departmental budgeting and accounting, fee and rate setting, and capital financing. Deals with the application of organizational behavior and management theory in institutional settings, including the use of quantitative and qualitative techniques in health organizations. Case studies, simulations, problem solving, role playing, computers, applied research, and management information systems are used to build practical leadership and decision-making management skills.

Provides medical professionals with knowledge and skills applicable to medical industry research needs. Examines alternative methods of quantitative and statistical design, data gathering, analysis and report preparation. Each student is assigned a research project that incorporates the components of a research program unique to the medical industry. ISP only.

Prereq: enrollment in final semester before graduation; perm. Provides field experience in a health service organization (preferably not one in which the student is employed) during the final semester or after all coursework has been completed. Students develop a formal service or program plan for the organization during a departmental rotation. Formerly 409.

Provides medical professionals with knowledge and skills applicable to medical industry management processes. Examines successful management practices of large, medium and small health care organizations in both the public and private sectors; reviews aspects of management including budgeting, performance plan development, personnel policies, and evaluation. Incorporates a significant number of case studies.
