Introduces basic first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) , and automated defibrillator machines. As part of the course, students must become certified in basic first aid, CPR, and the use of the auto defibrillator.

Provides firefighters with an understanding of the basic steps associated with a systematic approach to a safe and appropriate response to hazardous materials incidents. Helps students develop the knowledge and skills required to identify various classes of hazardous materials as well as the basic options, requirements, and limitations of the methods used to control, contain, or confine a hazardous materials incident. Based in part on FEMA/USFA/NFA Basic Concepts and Concept Implementation courses.

Provides firefighters with an understanding of current challenges, techniques, and equipment available for the safe and effective extrication of victims trapped in land-based vehicles of all types. Focuses on scene management and incident command as well as extrication equipment and its use. Includes passenger vehicles, buses, medium and heavy trucks, rail cars, and industrial and agricultural vehicles. Adheres to IFSTA guidelines.

Teaches safe operation of a wide variety of fire rescue vehicles and pump equipment. Topics include safe emergency driving tactics and skills; routine maintenance; identification and safe operation of various pumps; basic hydraulic principles and their effect on water flow, water hydrants and water supplies; and foam and foam applications. Satisfies NFPA 1002, Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications.

Defines the role of the initial responder and provides essential knowledge for recognizing the potential of an intentionally set fire, preserving evidence, and properly reporting the information to appropriate officials. Basic topics include fire behavior, critical observations of the first responder, fire cause scene security and evidence preservation, legal considerations, and proper reporting of findings. Based in part on FEMA/USFA/NFA Arson Detection for First Responder course.

Multidisciplinary introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS) . Incorporates various incident scenarios and activities including ICS orientation, incident facilities, incident resource management, and incident command system assignments. Also addresses command operations at structural collapse incidents and the safety officer's role at emergency responses. Based in part on FEMA/USFA/NFA Incident Command System, Incident Command System for Structural Collapse, and Incident Safety Officer courses.

Provides basic leadership skills and tools needed to perform effectively in the fire service environment. Covers a wide range of leadership topics, including techniques and approaches to problem solving, identifying and assessing the needs of the company officer's subordinates, running effective meetings, decision-making skills for the company officer, ethics, use and abuse of power at the company officer level, management of multiple roles, creativity, delegating to and disciplining subordinates, applying coaching and motivation techniques, and assessment of personal leadership styles through situational leadership. Based in part on FEMA/USFA/NFA Leadership I, II, and III courses.

Helps develop a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the company officer in preparing for incident operations.
