This course was formerly known as BIOL 207. Prerequisite: Complete bIol& 241 or bIol 205 and 242 or 206 with a grade of "C" or higher. (242 may be taken with 253 concurrently.)

Topics include: morphology of microbes, microbial metabolism, microbial genetics, cultivation and growth identification and classification tests, control of microbial growth, pathogens, disease, and host defenses. A comprehensive overview of plant science, emphasizing plant form and function, life processes, diversity, genetics, propagation and biotechnology, and ecology. Laboratory and written work emphasize plants in the ecosystem, applied plant science gardening and agriculture, micros copy and experimentation. (Four lecture and two lab hours weekly). Introduction into flowering plants, conifers, ferns and mosses of Western Washington, with emphasis on identification, recognition, life history, ecological relationships and distribution. Prerequisite: none.
