Introduction to basic patient care skills including measurement of temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height and weight, body mechanics, patient interviewing and observations, charting principles, telephone etiquette and making appointments. Awareness of the possible effect of a patient's culture on response to medical care. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in AHE 100, 102, 200.

Universal procedures, infection control, quality management, sterile dressing change, quality management, renal medications, fluid and electrolyte balance. Basic concepts of lab testing and the relationship of these tests to dialysis and end stage renal disease (ESRD). Guidelines for dietary and 1. 2. nutritional factors involved in the care of renal patients. Discussion of the effect that culture may have on a patient's acceptance of the principles of nutrition in relation to renal disease. Prerequisite: DIATC 124 and 126 with a minimum C grade; concurrent enrollment in AHE 101, 109, and ENGL 170 or Department Chair permission.
