This interdisciplinary course introduces students to central problems in German history and culture, from the end of World War I to the end of the Cold War. Topics addressed include: the impact of World War I on German National Identity; Avant-garde culture in the Weimar Republic; the rise of Fascism and daily life in Nazi Germany; the Holocaust; cultural and political divides between East and West Germany. GERM 383, "Readings/Discussion of 20th -century Germany" - 1credit, is a companion course for German language students. (Cross-listed HIST 382)
