An educationally directed learning experience in which the student assists both instructor and students. The experience is directed toward an understanding and application of developmental theory especially as it applies to cognitive stages of development in first-year college students. Pass/Fail only. Topics include problem solving, set theory, number theory, numerations systems and algebra review. Particular emphasis is placed on the successive development of real numbers and the employment of electronic resources. The first course in a sequence of two mathematics courses designed for students pursuing teacher certification in areas other than secondary mathematics. Satisfies the Mathematics requirement of the Liberal Arts Core. Prerequisite knowledge: This course presumes an understanding of fractions, percentages, decimals, negative numbers, variables, and simplification of expressions. 3 credits.

Particular emphasis is placed on problem solving strategies and the employment of electronic resources. A study of basic algebraic skills and additional algebraic topics including (but not limited to) real numbers, rational numbers, and radicals; systems of linear equations; polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and exponential functions and equations; and complex numbers.
