Provides an opportunity to address current issues of relevance for students who will be responsible for implementing of technology used for education. It will include issues of security,privacy, and responsible uses of resources. Students will research and evaluate, in groups and individually, existing and emerging technologies in light of uses in teaching, administration, security and ethics, and will present relevant information as part of course requirements. Review of institutional, organization, local, regional, and national goals and standards; the role of the instructional design specialists (management,planning,budget, grant writing, staffing, resources, addressing adaptive needs, environment,public relations,and building community); and system assessment. Emphasis on the nature of adult learning and the interrelationships of the role of the instructor, the subject content, motivation, learner characteristics, time management, instructional theories and teaching models, evaluation and assessment and the technologies enhanced learning environment. Students will participate in a simulation to design and develop an experiential learning environment for a particular institutional, organizational, community service, or appropriate instructional function. Each participant will contribute to the process by applying theoretical constructs and practical skills to a proposed educational scenario. Having completed the basic coursework in theories and tenets of instructional design, the student will have the opportunity to apply these principles to specific practical development of instructional programs for various organizational settings, applications, and students needs. Students conduct appropriate needs assessments and analyses; design instructional strategies and prepare an integrated plan; develop an evaluation methodology; and anticipate revision options. Prerequisites: All core and content courses except ID890 and ED915. Fall semester. 3 credits.

The practicum in area field sites provides an opportunity for students to expand their skill base. The practicum may be completed in conjunction with a concurrent course in instructional design,development, or theory,but may not replace the assigned application portion of these courses. Capstone course of the International Studies major, includes a research project which can be incorporated into the student’s portfolio. The focus of the project is on a significant topic determined by each student in consultation with the instructor. Spring semesters, alternate years. 3 credits.
