Emphasis on individual economic units, such as the household and the firm;how they affect and are affected by the various market structures existing in American capitalism. This is an introductory course stressing the PA Academic Standards, philosophy, history, psychology, law, and sociology of education. Certification, school law, current issues/trends in special education and vocational technical education,and other topics related to the teaching profession are introduced. Student experiences will culminate in the development of a personal philosophy of education and observations in an area school to provide an opportunity for a special investigation of the profession. Topics covered include Bloom’s Taxonomy, instructional objectives, motivation and retention theories, cooperative learning, inclusive practices, classroom management, assessment, and the use of PA Academic Standards in lesson and unit planning. 3 credits.

Educational philosophies and instructional strategies for children with special needs. Topics will focus on specific characteristics of various disabilities, cultural and language barriers, gifted and talented, current legislation, inclusion strategies, and current issues in the field. Examines the characteristics and causes of mild/moderate retardation, learning disabilities, and behavior disorders. Emphasis will be placed on identification, learning needs, instructional strategies, programming, assessment practices, transition, research, and current practices. Prerequisite: ED205. Emphasis will be placed on identification, legal issues, programming, assessment, instructional models, transition, research, and promising practices. Prerequisite: ED208. Corequisite: ED303. Designed to assist prospective early childhood and elementary teachers in leading physical activities for children. Graded games, team games, simple folk dances, rhythms, and methods of teaching physical education to handicapped and non-handicapped children. Prerequisite or corequisite: ED201. 1 credit.
