2-4-0-3 This course is designed to introduce students to advanced clinical assisting skills. Clinical topics addressed include: pharmacology, drug administration, dosage calculations; electrocardiography, spirometry and performing diagnostic eye and ear procedures. Laboratory topics include lab safety, quality control, collecting and processing specimens, performing selective tests, and screening test results. Prereqs: (Eff. FL20) AH 113 with a C or better, which may be taken concurrently.

FL21) This course introuces students to communication theories and includes verbal and non-verbal techniques, active listening and conflict resolution as related to empathetic communication skills in areas of substance abuse, death and dying, lifespan dilemmas and culture. Students will apply their interpersonal communication skills and demonstrate professionalism in the use of case studies, role playing, and oral presentation.

1-0-1 (Eff. FL20) This course consists of professional skills development sessions that focus on preparation for a credentialing examination and career planning through various classroom activitis. Students prepare for entry-level employment in a health care facility with resume writing an interviewing skills activities. In addition, the complete certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Health Care Provider CPR, and First Aid certification. Prereqs: (Eff. FL20) AH 113 and AH 115, all of which may be taken concurrently.

3-0-3 This course addesses health care plans and providers and how they impact financial management, decision making, and the information requirements of the health care system. Reimbursement methodologies for both inpatient and ambulatory care delivery systems will be covered Prereq: ENGL 101

3-0-3 This course addresses diseas processes and the general classification of the causes of disease, as well as the common signs and symptoms of diseases, the body systems affected by disease, the diagnostic measures, and the types of treatments available. Prereq: AH 103; BIOL 107 or BIOL 109.

3-0-3 This course introduces students to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT). Students will learn to convert uniform descriptions of medical, surgical, and diagnostic services rendered by health care providers into five-digit numeric codes, necessary for reimbursement. They will learn to correctly apply modifiers to codes when necessary and when to assign temporary alphanumeric codes. The Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS) will also be introduced. Sample abstracts from medical records will be utilized for students to apply their knowledge and gain competence in coding. Prereq: AH 103, BIOL 107 or BIOl 109, and AH 190, which may be taken concurrently.

4-0-4 Students will be introduced to and learn to utilize not only the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding system used for reimbursement, but the detailed, comprehensive diagnostic coding system, International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding. Students will engage in hands on practice. Prereqs: AH 103 with a C or better, AH 120 with a C or better, AH 190 with a C or better, BIOL 108 with a C or better OR [BIOL 109 and 110] both with a C or better.

3-0-3 This course introduces students to the International Classification of Diseases-9th Revision-Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) official coding guidelines and principles. Students will learn to convert diagnostic and procedural terminology for services rendered by health care providers into numberic codes, necessary for statistical and reimbursement purposes. Case studies and sample patient health records will be utilized for students to apply their knowledge and gain competence in coding. Prereq: AH 103, BIOL 107 or BIOL 109, and AH 190, which may be taken concurrently.

3-0-3 This course explores the moral, legal and ethical aspects of healthcare. Topics include: rights and responsibilities of healthcare consumers; consequences of illegal and unethical behavior; malpractice, liability and criminal offenses; healthcare laws and regulations; and challenges or ethical dilemmas. Prereq: ENGL 101.

2-0-4-3 This course consists of two components: professional practice experience and classroom sessions. Each week the student will attend a coding proacticum in an affiliated health information department or physician's office to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to code patient health records, using both the ICD-9-CM and CPT coding systems. The classroom sessions will focus on discussion of professional practice assignments and on reviewing materials to help prepare students to take a national coding certifying exam. Prereqs: AH 190, AH 200, and AH 202.
