The social systems in which human development unfolds will be emphasized in the course as will the manner in which these can impair or foster health, happiness, and optimal adjustment across the lifespan. Development is looked at biologically, psychologically, sociologically and spiritually. Students will be introduced to the idea that aging and how we understand that process is socially influenced. The course will consider problems typical of various age groups and ways social workers can intervene. Social work's ecological perspective, which is concerned with the impact of the social environment, is emphasized.
