RS 124: Sacraments: Preparation and Reception

Students will be challenged to view the "seven sacraments" as an actualization of the church assacrament. The student will explore the historical development of each sacrament and relate these developments to the pastoral needs of the present church. Particular attention will be paid to the preparation of young people and adults for reception of the sacraments. Prerequisite: Enrollment in Catechist program or employment as a Catechist in a parish/school setting.

This course will provide an introduction to liturgical theology, the liturgy documents, and the place of worship in the Catholic Tradition. It will foster an understanding of the development of the liturgy in the Roman rite, and briefl y examine the basic practices of worship in the Byzantine rite. Through readings, discussions and individual refl ection, students will be encouraged to deepen their faith commitment and embrace the liturgy as the source and summit of Christian living. Prerequisite: Enrollment in Catechist program or employment as a Catechist in a parish/school setting.

In this course students will examine both the origin and the goal of Catholic Morality. The course attempts to deepen understanding of the meaning of the role of the Christian as a sharer of Divine life. We will examine several current moral issues including abortion, gun control, euthanasia and capital punishment in light of church teaching. Students will learn and demonstrate effective means of relating these issues to youth. Prerequisite: Enrollment in Catechist program or employment as a Catechist in a parish/school setting.
