This course will offer a continuous critique of the ways in which traditional journalistic standards, practices, and values are being translated and upheld by the practitioners of new media. Students will study and use the tools that online journalists use to tell stories on a multimedia platform. Students will examine the recent history of the move from traditional journalism to online journalism and will become familiar with both the practical and theoretical questions surrounding the use of new media technologies. By the end of the course, students should know about the current state of several debates in the field of new media and should be able to create content that upholds traditional journalistic values and pushes the boundaries of what is possible in using new media technologies to relate news and information in an online environment. They will also become familiar with the social, cultural, economic, and political changes brought about by new media technologies and applications. Prerequisite: ENG 213 or DCOM 285, or by permission of instructor. 3 credits.
