They involve further study of the structural and lexical features of Russian based upon topical subjects. They enhance understanding of the in-depth culture of Russia through presentations on its traditions of art, music, and literature.

3 credits Concentration Option or Patterns 1-2 or Socialist realism as a doctrine of art and literature in the Soviet Union. Readings from Gorky, Mayakovsky, Babel, Olesha, Leonov, Zamyatin, Zoshchenko, Sholokhov, Ilf and Petrov, Simonov, Pasternak, Yevtushenko, Solzhenitsyn, and others.

3 credits Concentration Option This course involves conversations on topical subjects and in-depth analyses of structural, lexical, and grammatical features of Russian. The conversations are drawn on the cultural activities and perspectives of the speakers of Russian (holidays, work habits, plight of ethnic minorities, church, and family).

3 credits Concentration Option Theory and practice in translating scientific and technical texts. Selected readings in economics, chemistry, physics, mathematics, geology, anatomy, and astronomy.
