L.Saltzman Poems and novels, films and photographs, paintings and performances, monuments and memorials, even comics-in the aftermath of Art Spiegelman's Maus-have been the cultural forms that engage us with the catastrophic and traumatic history of the Holocaust. Through these cultural forms we have come to know events considered by some to defy the very possibility of historical, let alone aesthetic, representation. Our task will be to examine such cultural objects, aided by the extensive body of the critical, historical, theoretical and ethical writings through which such work has been variously critiqued and commended.
