With a primary focus on the inner workings and structures of human service agencies, students will be afforded an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the administrative aspects of drug and alcohol, mental health, and child welfare services. Funding, federal and state regulations, licensing, credentialing, and the ever-evolving arena of managed care will be some of the primary issues addressed in this course.

This field experience, consisting of two experiences of 3 credits each, is meant to complement or be substituted for BHS 406 or BHS 407. A minimum of 100 hours field work is assigned to each 3-credit experience with requirements as specified in BHS 406.

6.00 Credits
This 6-credit practicum will require the student to choose a suitable and approved field placement site that is consistent with their major course of study (i.e., chemical dependency, mental health or child welfare). Field placements will occur at facilities that are licensed or approved by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Students will be required to complete their second and final field placement for this 6-credit course. As with the first field placement, the practicum site will need to be compatible with their degree track.

Issues relevant to working with special populations are examined. Impact of group membership on individual identity is explored. In addition, special populations such as the disabled, adolescents, elderly, women, sexual minorities, ethnic groups, and various professional groups (such as physicians, clergy, and lawyers) are considered. Depending on the population(s), this course can be utilized as an elective for one, two, or all three areas of concentration.

As deemed appropriate, the department will provide a variety of "special" seminars addressing current issues within the field of addictions and mental health treatment. HIV, Adolescents, Specialized Testing, Advanced Family Issues, and Life Span Development are just some of the potential courses that could be offered to broaden the student's experience, as well as assuring that advancements and changes have a mechanism to be addressed within the program structure. Depending on the issue(s) identified, this course can be utilized as an elective for one, two, or all three areas of concentration.

This course will challenge the student to develop an in-depth and working knowledge of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) classification of mental disorders. Designed to complement and build on the student's learning experience in the "Origins of Mental Illness" class, students will learn to utilize the current DSM in a hands-on fashion to formulate multiaxial diagnostic impressions of mental disorders. Students will develop a more focused and therapeutic approach to conducting diagnostic interviews and assessments while learning to identify and classify presenting psychiatric symptomatology and record their findings in a professionally acceptable format. Prerequisite: BHS 202

Emphasizes important biological concepts and principles common to all living organisms. Topics include the cell, energetics, genetics, physiology, evolution, and ecology. Integrates laboratory and classroom work. Fulfills lab science requirement for nonscience majors. Cannot take BIO 102 and BIO 103 for credit.
