One unit. Students complete a fi eld experience at an approved facility or they execute a theoretical research project. An undergraduate thesis is presented. Prerequisite: MA 223. Offered fall (with MA 421 OR 431, capstone course) and spring semesters (with MA 321 OR 373, capstone course) semesters.

One unit. Capstone course. Topological spaces and topological equivalence, the topology of the real line, metric spaces, compact spaces, connected spaces, Hausdorff spaces, and the separation axioms. Prerequisites: MA 223, 230, 232. Offered fall semester, odd years.

One unit. 431 Capstone course. Groups, rings, integral domains, fi elds, and Galois theory. Prerequisites: MA 223, 230, 232. Offered fall semester of evennumbered years (MA 431); spring semester of odd-numbered years (MA 432).

One unit. Divisibility, congruence, theorems of Wilson and Fermat, linear diophantine equations, Pell's equation, and the law of quadratic reciprocity. Prerequisite: MA 230. MA 431 is a recommended prerequisite. Offered spring semester, odd years.

One unit. An introduction to modern geometry through a unifi ed treatment of foundations; Euclidean geometry, projective and other non-Euclidean geometries. Prerequisite: junior standing. Offered fall semester, even years.

One unit. Newton's and other numerical methods, operators, fi nite differences, numerical integration, numerical solution of differential equations, and an introduction to computer arithmetic. Prerequisites: CS 130 and MA 122, 232. Offered fall semester, odd years.

Two units. Internship at an approved facility under the supervision of a faculty member. Prerequisite: permission of the department. Offered fall and spring semesters.

One unit. Topics selected according to student interest. This course will provide students with an opportunity to study a particular fi eld of their mathematical interest that may not be provided in the regular offerings or to continue their study beyond an existing course offering. Prerequisite: permission of the department. Offered periodically; consult department chair.
