This course surveys the history of selected regions of Africa from about the eighth to the early nineteenth century. Students are introduced to some of the most important sub-Saharan states and their cultures through the three basic sources for sub-Saharan African history before European influence: Oral tradition, archaeology, and Arabic chronicles. We explore the environmental and economic circumstances that account for the rise of these states, we proceed to acquaintance with their people, accomplishments and contributions, and we encounter the main factors involved in means of understanding major historical events. A survey of the history of selected regions of Africa in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this course deals with the events and processes leading to the European colonization of Africa and subsequent changes in African societies under colonial rule. This is a course about Africans and how they responded to the challenges and opportunities presented by foreign influences such as those accompanying colonialism.
