A lecture and lab-based course that covers the study of health care delivery and new trends of development in the management and processing of health information with emphasis on project management and the preparation of management documents. Topics include computerized medical record systems, consulting in medical records, cancer registries, financing health care, and record keeping practices for ambulatory care centers, long term care centers, and mental health care centers. Preparation for taking the RHIT exam is integrated throughout the course, during which students complete practice exams in HIM content areas and interact with the instructor to receive clarification about concepts and study techniques. This course should be taken in the student's last semester of study.

Elective course for students interested in advanced work in health information management in an area of special interest. Enrollment is limited in order to allow each student the opportunity to pursue his/her area of special interest.

A lecture and lab-based course that covers the study of new trends in management and processing of health information with emphasis on the electronic health record (EHR). This course covers the definition, benefits, standards, functionality, confidentiality and security, and impact of the EHR in the healthcare environment. The course explores implementation of the EHR including infrastructure required, project management techniques, information technology systems, workflow processes and redesign in various health care settings to include acute care, long term care, and mental health care. Legal issues created by implementation of the EHR will be explored. This capstone course should be taken in the student's last semester of study.

A lecture and lab-based course that includes study of the principles and practice of insurance and reimbursement processing, to include the assignment and reporting of codes for diagnoses and procedures/services; completion of CMS-1450 and CMS-1500 claims for inpatient, outpatient, emergency department, and physician office encounters; and the review of inpatient and outpatient cases to identify issues of fraud and abuse. Textbook cases and patient records will be used to code diagnoses/services/procedures and complete claims. Inpatient and outpatient reimbursement will be determined and source documents interpreted (e.g., Medicare Summary Notices).

An introductory study of medical transcription practices in the physician's office, which incorporates use of the American Association of Medical Transcription (AAMT) style guide. Students transcribe prerecorded medical dictation according to physician specialty using CD-ROM technology.

An advanced study of medical transcription practices in hospitals. Students will transcribe prerecorded hospital report dictation using CD-ROM technology. Reports will include histories, physical examinations, consultations, discharge summaries, operative reports, ancillary reports, progress notes, correspondence, and foreign dictation.

A supervised non-paid professional practice experience in the medical transcription section of a health care facility. Students will work under the direction of an on-site clinical supervisor, and they will also have college faculty consultation. The course is designed to enable students to obtain actual work experience in medical transcription procedures studied. It consists of 240 hours.

Student will survey field of advertising. The purpose and theory of advertising to its effective use will be discussed. Creative projects will be designed by the student as major forms of media are defined and discussed.

Examination of the principles and methods of salesmanship, or relationship selling, with respect to the salesman, the company, customers, and products. Emphasis is placed on the selling process: prospecting, approach, handling objections, and closing the sale. Practice in giving actual sales presentations, retail and industrial, is required of all students.
