It is the responsibility of the American government to promote and protect the health and welfare of the public while respecting the interests, and upholding the rights, of the individual. The content of this course addresses how the law balances these collective and individual rights. The material covers a broad range of legal issues in health care, including autonomy, privacy, liberty, and proprietary interests, from the perspective of the provider(s) and the patient.

Does God exist? Is time travel possible? Could you survive the destruction of your body? How do you know you are not in the Matrix? Do you have free will? Can war ever be just? These questions are important, and philosophy can help you find the answers. In this course, students will be introduced to the basic tools philosophers use to address these sorts of questions, as well as some of the more prominent arguments that have been advanced in defense of particular answers.

This is an introductory course in ethics. It will be focused on the different answers that have traditionally been given to questions like “What makes morally right things morally right?” and “How ought I to live my life?”. We will explore whether ethical statements are really truth-evaluable. Supposing that they are, will these truth values differ for different persons or different cultures? Supposing that they don’t, what is the best account of what makes an action objectively morally right or morally wrong?

We will examine and discuss contemporary moral issues such as abortion, the euthanasia, and drug law. We will learn to think about such issues analytically and with an eye to the deeper moral concepts and principles at stake.

This course will introduce you to formal logic. We will explore both propositional and first-order logic. We will rigorously define a formal language with formal inference rules and use them to test for various logical properties like validity, consistency, and entailment. We will learn to translate sentences from English into this formal language.

This course studies business ethics and the social responsibility of business organizations. It is designed to inform decision-making about ethical challenges arising in business. We will begin by looking at the place of business ethics in a competitive economy and by discussing fundamental questions about the moral responsibility of business corporations. Next we will explore the responsibilities of business corporations vis-à-vis clients, customers and employees. We will discuss issues such as professional conflicts of interest resulting from multiple business roles, information disclosure in advertising, fairness in sales practices and in hiring and treating employees. Then we will address ethical issues faced by individuals in business organizations, including the complex nature of managerial responsibilities, whistle-blowing, and organizational ethics. Finally, we will look at corporate responsibility in the international and domestic context.

What makes a situation aesthetic? What are aesthetic properties and how do we know some objects have them? What are aesthetic values and how do we justify our value judgments? We will examine historical answers to these questions. Among the views to be studied are those of Aristotle, Shaftesbury, Hutcheson, Burke, Hume, and Kant.
