OPT 256: Senior Laboratory

OPT 256 consists of 10 laboratory experiments. Students work in pairs and perform five of these experiments plus an approved independent experiment of their own design. Each group is required to submit a detailed report in journal format for each lab performed. In addition, each group must present one of the experiments orally before the instructor(s) and teaching assistants.

This course exposes students to the underlying model for modern electron and ion beam optics. Intensive laboratory experience is provided leading from simple operations to complex sample investigations, including high resolution imaging, x-ray emission spectrometry, nano-scale lithography, and high-end image presentation. Part II of the senior capstone design experience for the Optics program. Following the preparations of the fall semester students work in teams to design, build, and test an optical device or instrument for a faculty, community or industrial sponsor. The focus of the course will be on final project documentation and execution including the fabrication and testing of the device or instrument. Accompanying lectures and discussions introduce issues related to ethics, economics, regulation, safety, and reliability.
