A laboratory course designed to introduce students to the theory and practice of biochemical, computational and molecular biology techniques. Students will gain first-hand experience with these techniques, instrumentation and computational methods for macromolecular analysis. Topics which will be covered are: agarose gel and SDS polyacrylaminade gel electrophoresis; computer assisted protein structure analysis, RNA secondary structure analysis, DNA sequence database searching and DNA sequence alignment; DNA isolation; DNA cloning; DNA restriction fragment analysis; polymerase chain reaction; laboratory safety; transformation of bacteria; expression of recombinant proteins; transfection of mammalian cells; subcellular trafficking of proteins; fractionation and purification of proteins; affinity chromatography, enzyme reactions and measuring kinetic parameters; spectrophotometry; RNA secondary structure, DNA and protein quantification and western blotting.
