(3, OD) This course will examine the dilemma involved in the relationship between "law and order" within liberalsocieties like the United States. In democratic "free" societies, there is a constant tension between the needfor social order (and police efficiency in suppressing crime) and procedural law involving Constitutionally protected rights. We will examine the police, courts, prisons, probation and parole systems in light of this tension.
