This course will provide a broad background and application of basic chairside procedures. The areas that will be covered didactically and practiced in a pre-clinical setting are: a. Dental Assisting as a Profession; b. Delivery of Dental Treatment; c. Record Taking; d. Medical Emergencies; e. Oral Examination; f. Preventive Dentistry; g. Dental Instrumental and Accessories; h. This course focuses on the extra-expanded duties allowed by New York State Education Law, Section 6608. These skills include(1) providing patient education; (2) taking preliminary medical histories and vital signs; (3) placing and removing rubber dams; (4) selecting and pre-fitting provisional crowns; (5) selecting and pre-fitting orthodontic bands; (6) removing orthodontic arch wires and ligature ties; (7) placing and removing matrix bands; (8) taking impressions for study casts or diagnostic casts; (9) removing periodontal dressings; (10) removing sutures. Prerequisites: C grade or better in DAC 101, DAC 102, DAC 103, DAC 201. Co-requisite: DAC 203.
