This course will explore the main historical, literary and cultural tendencies that occurred in Spain from the 18th century to 21st century. Topics will include: the link between literature, history, and the arts, society and its traditions. The student will study a main text on civilization and culture of Spain as well as selections of literary, critical, and/or artistic works related to the topics discussed in class. Through the reading of historical accounts, essays, excerpts of novels, short stories, and poetry, as well as through the analysis of art, film, and music from the different regions, we will span over 400 years of Spanish American literature and culture up to the emergence of the independent American states.
